Dave Wheeler was born September 5th, 1979 in Fort McMurray Alberta to a Millwright father and Registered Nurse mother, Wayne and Mary. He graduated from Father Mercredi High School, and quickly after studied Sociology and Political Science at Keyano College, before receiving his associate degree in communication via the CTSR program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary Alberta. Dave is bilingual, having completed his grade school studies in French immersion, and is currently studying Spanish as a third language.
He started his first job at 13 years old, peddling an ice cream bike in the summer for Dickie Dee, worked selling shoes and sporting apparel at Forzani’s throughout High School as well as at McDonalds, and Pizza Hut. After graduating high school, he served tables in the hospitality industry at earls, and bartended at Moxies, also working an on-air radio shift during the weekends on KYX 98 and CJOK. While attending college, Dave worked as an overnight radio host on CJAY 92, and Country 105 in Calgary, and acting as in-house announcer for the Calgary Hitmen home games, all while completing his course load in school.
A competitive hockey player in his teens, an unfortunate on-ice accident left him blind in his right eye, and his focus shifted to hockey roles off the ice. As an assistant coach of the Lloydminster Blazer Jr. A hockey club in the AJHL, he also hosted his first radio morning show at 106.1 The Goat in Lloydminster. Moving to Winnipeg in 2003, Dave continued both his passion for radio, and hockey. He was the assistant coach of the St. Boniface Seals Jr. ‘B’ hockey club, and later assistant coach of the Transcona Railers Jr. ‘A’ hockey club in the MMJHL. Dave moved to Winnipeg to host the popular ‘Wheeler and Hal’ morning show on Power 97, and did so until 2012, where he moved his ‘Wheeler in The Morning’ show to the legendary 92 CITI FM in Osborne Village. ‘Wheeler in The Morning’ became a hit amongst Winnipeggers, and saw the show simulcast on City TV in Winnipeg, and the radio show was syndicated across Canada. Dave has also been the in-house announcer for the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, The CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and The NHL’s Winnipeg Jets. Having a flare for the dramatic, Dave has acted on stage, television, and film over his tenure as an ACTRA union member and has been seen on stage around Canada doing stand-up comedy. Dave has been a feature writer for the Winnipeg Sun, JetsNation.ca and The American Comedy Network.
A well-rounded musician, he is fluent on the piano, guitar, drums, and trumpet, having played in a handful of ensembles and bands throughout his life.
Dave married the love of his life, Candace Rae in June of 2012. They have 2 sons, Angus and Odin, an umbrella cockatoo, a black cat, and a St. Bernard. Dave and his wife Candace Rae currently host a daily variety podcast, called: ‘Wheeler in The Morning with Dave and Candace Rae’ since July of 2018. An avid golfer, Dave can regularly be found playing at Elmhurst Golf Club, and wherever he can get a round in.
